Highland Fire in Ramona -- forward progress stopped

April 21, 2026 (Ramona) -- A vegetation fire that is active in Ramona and has been threatening structures, has had its forward progress stopped as of 2:05 p.m., according to CAL FIRE.

Watch Duty App had reported that although the forward rate of the fire has been stopped, the fire was at five acres with all air resources released.

Just after 1:30 p.m. today, CAL FIRE initially reported that firefighters were at a scene of a vegetation fire at the 14950 block of Highland Valley Road in Ramona. The fire was initially reported at four acres with an an immediate structure threat.

Cal State University San Marcos and nearby homes evacuated due to brush fire

April 5, 2026 (San Marcos) – The #MoreeFire in San Marcos has led to evacuations, including the California State University San Marcos Campus.  

Evacuation orders and warnings have been issued. As this is a rapidly changing situation, check the Genasys Map for the current evacuation zones: 

CSU San Marcos sent this emergency alert:  “Main Campus Evacuation - DO NOT exit campus via Campus View and La Moree. Follow all police instructions. Do not come to campus."

A Temporary Evacuation Point is open at Mission Hills High School located at 1 Mission Hills Court, San Marcos, CA 92069, per San Diego Sheriff on X.

April 4, 2026 (San Diego County) -- With "fire season" now a year-round threat, public input is growing in importance as part of information fire officials need to be aware of for the most success in fire protection and fire suppression.
 
Senate Minority Leader Brian W. Jones has put out the word that the state needs residents to weigh in on the 2026 San Diego County Community Wildfire Protection Plan Update.
 
The CWPP is a strategic document that will dictate the region’s fire mitigation priorities and grant eligibility for the next five years.
 
The Fire Safe Council of San Diego County, in partnership with the Resource Conservation District and the California Department of Forestry and Fire, is leading the effort to modernize existing 2019 framework.

California’s Zone Zero defensible space law is now in effect for new home construction; existing homes must comply by February 2027

April 3, 2026 (San Diego County) – New structures being built in Very High Fire Severity Zones in California must now comply with state-mandated Zone Zero wildfire safety requirements, which includes the area within five feet of an occupied dwelling.

Brush fire burning in Santee near Town Center

Update 9:14 p.m.  Forward spread has been stopped. 
 
Update 7:42 p.m. -- The fire has crossed the river and is now burning directly behind commercial buildings including Michael's.  "There appears to be no direct access for engines to get to it," ECM reporter Patrick Ward says. The Sheriff has evacuated some stores and is advising the public to avoid the area.

March 29, 2026 (Santee) – Fire crews are battling the Town Center Fire burning in vegetation in the 100 block of  River Rock Court, across the river from Walmart and the Town Center shopping plaza. The fire is within 50 to 100 yards of commercial structures and has burned 3 aces as of 7:40 p.m., per Watch Duty.

Per Watch Duty App, the incident commander has requested a type 1 strike team of 5 engines, a strike 3 team of 5 engines, and a water dropping helicopter.

Ground crews are now engaged in structure protection on the south side of the river due to a threat to commercial structures there.

El Cajon approves funds for reconstruction of Fletcher Hills Fire Station 7

March 28, 2026 (El Cajon) – Heartland Fire’s station 7 in Fletcher Hills, built in 1960, will soon undergo major renovations. El Cajon’s City Council voted unanimously on Tuesday to approve budget revisions for the reconstruction.

Extreme heat watch issued for coming week

March 14, 2026 (San Diego’s East County) – An extreme heat watch has been issued by the National Weather Service for San Diego County over the next week. Temperatures will start to climb Sunday, with high temperatures 20 to 30 degrees above normal starting Tuesday. By mid-week, temperatures above 100 degrees are forecast, with potential to break record high temperatures.

There is a high risk for heat-related illnesses for people, pets and livestock. Stay well hydrated and avoid outdoor activities during the heat wave. Those without access to air conditioning can visit a county library, community center, or indoor mall.

CERT makes emergency preparedness fun

March 11, 2026 (San Diego) - Preparing for emergencies is serious, but it doesn’t have to be dull.

San Diego County Fire’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is a volunteer group trained to help their neighbors during a disaster. Members also attend community events to share information about disaster preparedness.

Hazardous weather system moves into region

February 16, 2026 (San Diego)—A wind advisory is in effect today across San Diego County through 8 p.m., with another wind advisory tomorrow due to a storm system bringing heavy rains and strong wind gusts up to 45 miles per hour.

Yet another storm will sweep into the area Wednesday through Thursday morning.Use caution if driving, due to potential strong winds, slick roads, and possible snow at higher elevations. Avoid driving in desert areas during rainfall due to potential for flash floods.

Fire destroys 2 businesses in Spring Valley

January 26, 2026 (Spring Valley) — A three-alarm fire that broke out around 2:45 a.m. destroyed two businesses in a strip mall at 8300 Paradise Valley Road in Spring Valley, causing water and smoke damage to two others.

“A total of 18 businesses were saved due to the quick response from everyone involved,” San Miguel Fire District posted on Facebook.

CRASH ON PINE VALLEY BRIDGE DELAYS MOTORISTS

Dec. 30, 2025 (Pine Valley) -- A motorhome accident on the Pine Valley bridge has shut down one lane of I-8 east and knocked down 80 feet of guardrail, per the California Highway Patrol. Westbound lanes remain open.

Motorists traveling east are advised to take an alternative route by exiting I-8 onto State Route 79 north through Descanso, then turn east (right) onto Pine Valley Road.

Escaped felon in Lemon Grove

Dec. 24, 2025 (Lemon Grove) -- The Lemon Grove Sheriff's Substation is looking to the public for help in locating a wanted felon who escaped from custody. 
 
Just after 4 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 18, Sheriff's Deputies observed Hiram Sanchez, 36, in the 7100 block of Broadway in Lemon Grove. He was wanted on an active and outstanding felony warrant. Deputies contacted Sanchez and placed him in handcuffs.
 
During the arrest, Sanchez fled from deputies on foot onto state Route 94, placing himself and the deputies in extreme danger. Deputies did not pursue Sanchez onto the freeway.
 
At some point, Sanchez slipped out of his handcuffs and continued to run away.
 
Deputies immediately coordinated with the California Highway Patrol as well as with the San Diego Police Department's helicopter and Sheriff's K-9 resources to conduct a thorough search of the area, but Sanchez was not located.

SDG&E urges caution around downed power lines

 During rainstorms, power lines may become damaged or fall, potentially posing a threat to those nearby. It is crucial for customers to stay safe, be vigilant and take necessary precautions to avoid potential dangers associated with downed power lines.

Crest Fire Safe Council Awarded 3-year CAL FIRE grant for curbside chipping program

Dec. 19, 2025 (Crest) -- The Crest Fire Safe Council has been awarded a three-year Wildfire Prevention Grant from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection to support a community-wide curbside chipping program aimed at reducing wildfire risk and improving defensible space throughout Crest.
 
Crest encompasses approximately 4,180 acres, with nearly 2,900 residents and 1,395 structures, and lies entirely within a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone.
 
The Crest Fire Safe Council has demonstrated sustained leadership in promoting defensible space and fuels-reduction efforts across the community. This grant represents both a continuation and expansion of those ongoing initiatives.

December 10, 2025 (Lakeside) – Lakeside firefighter/paramedic Jeff Reyes acted “without hesitation, drawing on instinct, training and sheer courage” to save the life of Captain Steven Russo, who fell through the floor of a burning building, said Lakeside Fire Protection Chief Don Butz during a ceremony yesterday recognizing Reyes’ heroism.

Engineer Shawn McKenna was also recognized for his critical role in transmitting the emergency message and facilitating the rescue.

Crews were battling a two-alarm commercial building in March when Russo fell through a hole in the floor, not realizing the fire was directly underneath him, according to Battalion Chief Eric Stamm. He called the situation “perilous” adding,  “Jeff grabbed Captain Russo and pulled him out of the floor.”

CAL FIRE announces statewide transition to new national emergency reporting system

November 5, 2025 (Sacramento) -  Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) announced today that fire departments across the state are beginning the transition to the National Emergency Response Information System (NERIS), a secure, cloud-based platform built to modernize how emergency incidents are reported and analyzed.

Deer mouse tests positive for Hantavirus in Rancho Cuyamaca State Park

October 29, 2025 (Cuyamaca) -- A deer mouse collected in routine monitoring Oct. 22 at the Los Vaqueros Group Horse Campground in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park has tested positive for the potentially deadly hantavirus.

Finding hantavirus in wild rodents is not uncommon in San Diego County. And people rarely come into direct contact with infected animals because wild rodents naturally avoid humans.

Even so, County officials are advising people to take precautions, especially when pulling out those holiday decorations from sheds, garages or attics in case there have been infected rodents living in those areas.

County launches new Alert San Diego app, replacing SD Emergency

Oct. 24, 2025 (San Diego County) -- The name and look of the emergency information app for the County of San Diego has changed, and now has new features to help keep residents safe.
 
Known previously as SD Emergency, it is now called Alert San Diego. The updated app is part of the County Office of Emergency Services’ (OES) modernized emergency communication system. The app provides a one-stop place for quick access to official alerts, interactive maps, preparedness tips and recovery resources.

Inmate firefighters get pay raise under bill signed by Governor

October 14, 2025 (Sacramento) – They risk their lives to battle wildfires. Yet California’s inmate firefighters are currently paid just $1 to $10 for an entire day’s work, plus $1 an hour during active duty.  A bill signed by Governor Gavin Newsom will raise the rate to $7.25 an hour (the federal minimum wage) during active duty.

County approves purchase of firefighting helicopter with nighttime capabilities

October 21, 2025 (San Diego) -- The San Diego County Board of Supervisors Tuesday approved the purchase of a firefighting helicopter with nighttime capabilities, which will be upgraded to accommodate a full crew for fire and rescue missions.

Evacuations lifted in Rancho Fire

October 9, 2025 (Ramona) – Evacuations have been lifted in the fast-moving #RanchoFire in Ramona, which has burned 105 acres and earlier threatened homes. The blaze, which started from a vehicle accident igniting brush, is 15% contained and forward spread is stopped.

The fire began near Highway 78 and Casner Road, east of Ramona this afternoon, per Cal Fire. Multiple air tankers, helicopters and ground crews battled the blaze.
