East County News ServiceApril 22, 2026 (El Cajon) -- For two decades, the halls of Villa Musica’s Sorrento Valley headquarters have been alive with a specific kind of beautiful chaos -- the steady thumps on the drum, soaring scales of soprano singers and the first notes of student violinists.
Now with Villa Musica is celebrating its 20th anniversary, the nonprofit community music center is opening a second site, in El Cajon.
Villa Musica East will open soon at 2382 Fletcher Parkway in Fletcher Hills. The new satellite campus marks a historic expansion for an institution that has become a cornerstone of San Diego’s cultural landscape.
The expansion goes beyond Villa Musica's celebration of its longevity -- it’s a response to an overwhelming demand for arts education.
Villa Musica currently serves more than 500 private lesson students, with an additional 200 participants enrolled in group classes and ensembles.
At the original Sorrento Valley location, every square inch is utilized. Offices often do double duty as lesson rooms, and the schedule is packed from morning until night. The move to East County provides a much-needed pressure valve and a massive opportunity for growth, says Fiona Chatwin, Villa Musica's artistic and executive director.
With 10 studios and three offices in Fletcher Hills, the group is poised to replicate its Sorrento Valley numbers over time and bring that same energy to a whole new community.
“Villa Musica will be a great asset to the already flourishing arts community in East County,” Chatwin said. “We are really open to collaboration, and hope that we will bring additional people to the area. Our Admin team, and Board of Directors have already become locals at the Barbecue Pit next door, and Maria’s coffee stand across the street is becoming a favorite! I think by adding our foot-print to this community we will definitely be a positive addition.”
The journey East was deliberate
Backed by a grant from the Prebys Foundation, Villa Musica conducted a formal feasibility study to identify where the need for music education was greatest. After a year-long search for the perfect venue, the Fletcher Hills location emerged as winner, Villa Musica leadership said.
Since receiving the keys in March, the Villa Musica crew have been working tirelessly to overhaul the space.
The goal is to transform the building into a reflection of the organization’s tagline: #YourHomeForMusic.
For Chatwin, the home aspect of the mission is as important as the music. The new facility is designed to be a communal hub rather than a cold institution, she said.
The lobby has been planned as a vibrant, colorful space lined with comfortable couches and a dedicated toy and book nook for siblings. The Homework Hub is a dedicated area with tables, chairs and free Wi-Fi where students can study or parents can work while waiting for lessons and on Sunday afternoons, the Homework Hub will become a performance space where students showcase their progress to family and friends.
The layout includes eight standard studios, a dedicated drum studio and a specialized children’s music room for early childhood group classes.
Coming soon
Villa Musica East will open its doors with a phased rollout of programming later this spring, starting with a series of Open House events in May and June and also into July to sign up students, both children and adults, who are looking for private lessons in piano, violin, guitar, drums, cello and voice.
Also in June and July, Villa Musica East will hold some short-session group calsses for beginners in the elementary school age range. The four-week classes will be shared on the website starting May 1.
And in August, the 15-week semester will start with group classes for Early Childhood Music, violin, guitar and singing. Group classes are limited to eight participants. Villa Musica leaders say that registration will be open soon.
A core tenet of Villa Musica's mission since its 2005 founding is accessibility.
