October 10, 2014 (Spring Valley)---The San Diego Gas and Electric Company and Farmers Insurance donated a total of $14,000 to purchase Ice Machines for 5 of the Fire Stations within the San Miguel Fire District.  The generation of a large supply of ice is a simple but effective tool in keeping Firefighters hydrated and cooler.

September 26, 2014 (San Diego’s East County)— For week three in our quest to bring you the most delightful and different happy hours across our inland region, we indulged in French cuisine and burgundy at Bleu Boheme, owned by a prominent San Diego retauranteur in Kensington. We also found fabulous half-price barbecue tri-tip and wings so hot they’re named for a local firefighters’ crew at Cali Comfort in Spring Valley, a sports bar and restaurant that has found the winning combination for hospitality.

August 23, 2014 (Spring Valley) – The developer of the proposed Sweetwater Village housing development on the former Evergreen Nursery site have requested to be added to the agenda for the Spring Valley Community Planning Group’s meeting on September 23^rd. The meeting will be held at 2850 Via Orange Way in the San Miguel Fire headquarters at 7 p.m.

August 12, 2014 (Spring Valley) –The body of a woman who suffered traumatic injuries was found in a Spring Valley home in the 500 block of Parkbrook Street tonight.  A man found inside with self-inflicted lacerations on his wrists from an apparent suicide attempt has been arrested, after receiving treatment at a local hospital, said Sheriff’s Homicide Lieutenant Glenn Giannantonio.

August 7, 2014 (Spring Valley)--The Sheriff's Department wants your help in identifying and locating a man who robbed a bank in Spring Valley.

July 1, 2014 (Spring Valley) – Sheriff’s homicide investigators seek information on the death of Spring Valley resident Darius Jerel Reeves, 24.  Deputies found his body in an apartment complex at 9121 Kenwood Drive after receiving reports of gunfire this morning at 2:35 a.m., said Lieutenant Jeffrey Duckworth.

An autopsy is pending to determine the cause and manner of death.

Planner urges public input as developer asks to reduce park size

May 10, 2014 (Spring Valley ) – At its meeting May 13^th at 7 p.m., the Spring Valley Community Planning Group’s action items include the Sweetwater Village housing proposed on the former Evergreen Nursery Property site.  Michael Daly, Vice Chair of the Planning Group, indicated that citizen participation is encouraged at the meeting, where the fate of the former Evergreen Nursery at 2657 Sweetwater Springs Boulevard will be discussed.

If you live live in the Spring Valley area and are concerned about the lack of parks, be aware that potential changes to park size and other project elements may be discussed.

Also on the agenda is a major use permit for 12 antennas, 24 remote radio units, six TMAs, and four surge protectors on a new 50-foot monopine, along with ancillary equipment.

April 29, 2014 (Spring Valley)--FBI Special Agent in Charge, Daphne Hearn, has announced the arrest of Terrence Mack Carter, age 30, on Tuesday, April 29, 2014.  Carter was taken into custody by members of the San Diego FBI SWAT Team at approximately 3:00 p.m. today in the vicinity of the 9000 block of Kenwood Drive, Spring Valley, California. He was arrested after members of the San Diego FBI SWAT Team made entry into the apartment Carter was hiding in.

April 16, 2014 (San Diego’s East County)--Members of the San Diego SeaStars Synchronized Swimming Team, which practices in Spring Valley, earned 9^th place in the duet event at the 2014 U.S. National Championships.

March 24, 2014 (Casa de Oro)--Reina Lisa Menasche, radio host for East County Magazine’s “Bookshelf” radio program on KNSJ, 89.1 FM, will discuss, dramatize, and sign her new novel, Silent Bird, at the Casa de Oro Library on Saturday, March 29 at 10 a.m.

Reina Menasche calls her first love “writing fiction,” though she fulfills many other artistic and professional roles.  In addition to hosting “Bookshelf” (highlighting “local literary luminaries—and some great books to read!”), she is also a social worker, university instructor, and actress.  Her first novel, Twice Begun, was a finalist in the 2013 San Diego Book Awards, and her new novel, Silent Bird, won the Outstanding Fiction Award from the Southern California Writers Conference in 2009.

February 11, 2014 (Rancho San Diego)- At the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Rancho San Diego police station, many community members showed their support.

January 29, 2014 (Spring Valley) – February is Black History Month. To celebrate, the Spring Valley Library will hold a free community event on Saturday, February 8 from 1 to 4 p.m. 

Entertainment will be provided by the Martin Luther King Jr. Choir and the WorldBeat Center’s drummers and dancers.  The public can also meet and greet legendary National Hockey League player Willie O’Ree.  In addition, crafts, refreshments and health screenings for all ages wil be provided.

On January 17, the Kiwanis Club of La Jolla granted Noah Homes $2,500 for energy saving appliances. Noah Homes is a nonprofit in Spring Valley that provides free housing and care to 70 adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Noah Homes’ vision as a self-sustaining and recognized model of care includes solar panels that are already in the works and other environmentally friendly cost-saving measures. In addition to energy saving appliances, Noah Homes is taking steps in sustainability including planting a vegetable garden, installing solar panels and switching to environmentally friendly hand dryers.

December 25, 2013 (Spring Valley ) – In the early hours of Christmas morning at 12:32 a.m., Lemon Grove Sheriff Deputies responded to a radio call to help San Miguel Fire Department at a brush fire reported near homes on South Granada Avenue in Spring Valley.  Upon arrival, deputies and firefighters found a residence on fire at the rear of the house.

Fortunately, residents had safely evacuated.  Firefighters doused the blaze and asked Sheriff’’s Bomb-Arson unit to investigate. The fire’s cause was determined to be accidental.
