ALLEGED ROBBER WHO DROWNED IN SWEETWATER RESERVOIR IDENTIFIED

July 16, 2011 (Spring Valley) –The Medical Examiner has identified the body of a man who drowned in the Sweetwater Reservoir on July 12th. Ebon Brandt Taylor, 31, reportedly broke into a home and assaulted a resident, who called 911.
 

According to the San Diego Sheriff’s office, the suspect was later seen walking into the Sweetwater Reservoir; his behavior was described as “odd” by witnesses.

MOTORIST DRIVES HOME WITH VICTIM'S BODY IN FRONT SEAT AFTER HORRIFIC ACCIDENT ON HWY 125

 

July 3, 2011 (Lemon Grove) – Lon Scully, 74, was struck and killed around 2 a.m. Friday morning while attempting to cross the southbound lanes of State Route 125 north of Spring Street in La Mesa when he was struck by a silver Hyundai sedan, the San Diego Medical Examiner’s office reports.

 

The accident severed the victim’s legs and hurled his torso through the windshield, where it became lodged in the front seat, CHP spokesman Brian Pennings said, La Mesa’s Patch.com reported.

SPRING VALLEY BRIDGE JUMPER LINKED TO DEATHS OF WOMAN, CHILDREN IN CHULA VISTA

June 1, 2011 (Spring Valley) – Following a suicide off the 125 bridge near State Route 54 in Spring Valley this morning, California Highway Patrol officers traced the victim’s car license plate—and made a gruesome discovery. The bodies of 41-year old Mary Alvarez, and her children, 12-year old Angelica Alvarez and 11 year old Ahmid Alvarez, were found inside a Chula Vista townhouse at 1746 Currant Way, said Chula Vista Police Department's public information officer Bernard Gonzales.

BRIDGE SUICIDE ON HIGHWAY 125 AT 54

June 1, 2011 (Spring Valley ) – A man has jumped to his death off a bridge over northbound State Route 125 just south of Highway 54, CHP reports. The victim has not been identified, however the CHP website indicates he had left the home he shared with his wife and has been missing for two days.

OTAY WATER DISTRICT APPROVES 2012 BUDGET AND RATE HIKES

 

 

May 24, 2011 (Spring Valley)– The Otay Water District’s (the District) Board of Directors has approved its budget for fiscal year 2011-2012. The budget adopted by the District includes a rate increase of 7.7 percent for water service and a 7.5 percent rate increase for sewer effective January, 2012.

 

"The $78.1 million operating budget and $22.6 million Capital Improvements Projects (CIP) budget reflect the District’s ongoing efforts to lessen the impact of higher water costs on customers," a press release issued by the district stated.

MISSING DIABETIC MAN, 85, IN SPRING VALLEY

May 19, 2011 (Spring Valley) -- The Sheriff seeks public help to locate Oscar Leyva Gonzales, 85. The elderly man, who has diabetes, went missing from Presidio Healthcare, a board and care facility at 3825 Lamar Street in Spring Valley five days ago on May 14.  The Sheriff did not notify media until today.

 

He does not have his medications with him.  He was wearing a black button-up shirt, black pants and sneakers.

RECYCLING CENTER EMPLOYEE ROBBED AT GUNPOINT IN SPRING VALLEY

May 19, 2011 (Spring Valley) – Lemon Grove Sheriff’s Station deputies responded to an armed robbery reported yesterday morning around 9:25 a.m. at the Troy Street Recycling Center, 8743 Troy Street in Spring Valley.

The victim reported that he was robbed at gunpoint by three suspects as he was entering the business to open up. The suspects are described as two Hispanic males, one wearing a mask, and a female. A handgun was used to commit the robbery. The suspects fled in a black four-door vehicle that was recovered a short time later in Spring Valley at a nearby location.

ROAD CLOSURES IN EAST COUNTY

April 25, 2011 (San Diego’s East County) – A fatality accident in La Mesa involving a pedestrian struck by a car has shut down Broadmoor Street between Jericho and Kathy, La Mesa Police has informed East County Magazine. In addition, Calavo Drive at Challenge Blvd. in Spring Valley is shut down due to a tree fallen across the road, the CHP website reports.

 

Also use caution on Highway 67, where a signal light has been reported out at Willows Road.

In addition, readers who may have spotted smoke late this morning needn't be concerned. A fire in trees and brush in National City put up a large header of smoke, Incident Page Network reports. However Heartland Fire dispatch assures us that the blaze was swiftly doused. While structures were briefly threatened, only some fencing was damaged.

PAROLEE AIRLIFTED OUT OF SPRING VALLEY CANYON

 

April 8, 2011 (San Diego’s East County) – Jack Messina, a parolee described by Sheriff’s officials as a “person of interest” in a 1995 cold-case killing in Texas was airlifted out of an East County canyon Friday.

 

Messina failed to report to his parole agent, according to a press release issued by the Sheriff. He was found in an intersection at Sweetwater Springs Blvd. and Jamacha Blvd. with a GPS tracking device running low on battery. Deputies found him “very drunk” with his foot in a soft cast on a trail muddy from the recent rain.

FATHER ARRESTED FOR SOLICITING MURDER OF DAUGHTER’S BOYFRIEND, A CONVICTED SEX OFFENDER

 

March 25, 2011 (La Mesa) La Mesa Police Department today arrested Domingos Oliveira, 50, of Spring Valley for soliciting the murder of his 19 year-old daughter’s boyfriend. Police were notified by the suspect’s daughter and boyfriend, after several posters had been placed on the campus of Grossmont College within the past two weeks.

MAN ARRESTED AT SPRING VALLEY DAY CARE CENTER ON DRUG CHARGES; BROTHER SUSPECTED OF BURGLARIES

 

February 19, 2011 (Spring Valley) –Lemon Grove Detectives and U.S. Marine Corps Criminal Investigators searched a home at 2851 Highlands Blvd. in Spring Valley Thursday morning that is also used as a licensed child day care center. Authorities had previously arrested Michael Manglicmot, 23, for desertion  from the Marine Corps.

 

Sheriff’s detective Joel Stranger, working with USMC-CID investigators, learned that Manglicmot was the primary suspect in several recent burglaries at Camp Pendleton and Spring Valley. During the search, stolen property items including USMC body armor and night vision equipment were found. Detectives arrested Manglicmot’s brother, Mario Solis, 27, on charges of drug possession and sale, as well as possessing a loaded firearm.

MAN SHOT IN SPRING VALLEY BY ROBBERS

February 8, 2011 (Spring Valley) – Curtis Haynes, 45, was shot four times after refusing to give up his wallet to a pair of robbers while walking outside the San Miguel Fire Station, in 3255 Helix Street in Spring Valley. He was struck in the torso, arm and both legs during the attack, which occurred around 7:03 p.m. last night.

MOTHER ARRESTED FOR MURDER OF DAUGHTER, 9

January 31, 2011 (San Diego’s East County) -- San Diego Police Department Homicide Unit detectives have arrested Crystal Cardenas for the murder of her daughter, Elizabeth Holloway, 9. The mother was arrested at 10:25 a.m. today while walking in the 1600 block of Canyon Road in Spring Valley.

 

On January 17 at 10:22 p.m., officers and paramedics were dispatched to the family’s home at 328 Milbrae Street in the Mountain View community when the child went into medical distress. She was taken to a trauma center, and her autopsy revealed she died from blunt force trauma.

SPRING VALLEY MAN ARRESTED FOR FIRING GUN IN HOME

 

January 23, 2011 (Spring Valley) – A Spring Valley man has been arrested for shooting a handgun inside his home at 1815 Sweetwater Road, #12, in Spring Valley. John Graham, 70, was reportedly intoxicated and despondent when he fired off the gun following an argument with his wife, who fled the residence. Deputies surrounded the home and made numerous calls into the residence via phone and loud speakers, but initially received no response.

SPRING VALLEY MAN ATTACKED BY SON WITH SAMURAI SWORD

December 29, 2010 (Spring Valley) – John Cahan, 39, pled not guilty to charges of elder abuse, first-degree burglary and assault with a deadly weapon. He is accused of walking into his father’s bedroom on Terrace Sprio in Spring Valley on December 26th and attacking him with a samurai sword.

MAN INJURED IN SPRING VALLEY APARTMENT FIRE AS FIREFIGHTERS SAVE OTHER UNITS

 

December 20, 2010 (Spring Valley)- -San Miguel firefighters used a 100-foot ladder truck to access a third story roof, cutting ventilation holes to control a raging condominium fire that threatened multiple units in the 3000 block of Charwood Drive in Spring Valley just before 4 a.m.

 

Five people were inside the unit when the fire began. One occupant told investigators he was trying to light the fireplace when the lighter flame ignited and there was was a swift explosion, as a ball of flame and embers shot out onto the area rug.

ELDERLY DRIVER INJURES THREE STUDENTS FROM MOUNT MIGUEL HIGH SCHOOL

December 2, 2010 (Spring Valley) -- San Miguel Firefighters responded in force to a multi-casualty accident which injured a driver and three Mount Miguel High School students who were walking home from school just after 3 p.m. today.  A section of Sweetwater Road was shut down, allowing Mercy Air to transport the most seriously injured student, according to Leonard Villareal, spokesman for San Miguel Fire.

SPRING VALLEY WOMAN, SAN DIEGO MAN DIE IN ROLLOVER CRASH AT -805 RAMP TO HIGHWAY 94

November 14, 2010 (San Diego’s East County) – On November 11, a vehicle driven by Deshaun Glover went out of control, struck a guardrail and electrical box, then overturned on the northbound I-805 transition ramp to Interstate 94. Glover, 21, and a rear seat passenger, Candice McClean, 21, of Spring Valley were ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.

MAN KILLED RUNNING ACROSS FREEWAY IS IDENTIFIED

November 14, 2010 (El Cajon) – Anthony Watson, 22, of Spring Valley was struck and killed on November 10th when he attempted to run across the westbound lanes of Interstate 8 near State Route 67. He was hit by an SUV. Medics transported him to Sharp Memorial Hospital’s trauma unit, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

November 4, 2010 (Spring Valley) – Detectives at the San Diego Sheriff’s Lemon Grove substation seek the public’s help to locate a heavy set Hispanic man in his 40s driving an older two-door blue or green car. According to detective Monica Sanchez, the man attempted to expose himself to a young girl walking t La Presa Middle School on October 28 between 8 and 8:15 a.m. He later grabbed the arm of a second girl walking to school and made sexually suggestive comments.

BLUE FLAYME PROTEST UP IN SMOKE: RESIDENTS FUME OVER HOOKAH LOUNGE GRANTED ALCOHOL PERMIT NEAR HIGH SCHOOL

October 26, 2010 (Spring Valley) Despite disapproval of two County agencies and community groups, the County’s Planning Commission gave the thumbs up for an Alcoholic Beverages commission (ABC) license allowing beer at Blue Flayme, a new Hookah lounge in Spring Valley. The Commission overturned a decision by the Department of Planning and Land Use (DPLU), which opposed the license.

 

Hookahs have been linked to serious health hazards.  Now, the new trend of combining Hookah smoking and alcohol consumption locally has many in the community up in arms.
